Honesty in Business
March 22, 1966

As Jon was fishing through what we affectionaly refer to as the Fenwick Family Archives and came across these little envelopes. First off, what a blast from the past. To think that someone would clip stories and send them to you is kind of bizarre. I can't imagine that ever happening in todays day and age, without paying for it.

The blue one actually had an advertisment for Bekins Moving and Storage in it and a business card.
Maybe they had the office personnel do these clippings while they were sitting around doing nothing.

The clippings told the story of how, in March of 1966, Dad was asked to talk at the Santa Barbara Advertising Club. I'm not totally sure why he was asked, he had only lived in the community for a couple of years. But as is reflected in these news paper clippings we found I guess he had made a name for himself. Board of Trustees for the School District, Secretary for the board of managers, (not sure what that means), and member of the building committee for the new YMCA in 1966.

According to the clippings the subject of the talk was "Where Does Honesty Start and End in Business?" Knowing the character of my Dad it didn't surprise me at all to hear this but what was facinating to me was that there was such evidence of his strong belief of this dating back to the mid 60's.

Clippings from immediatly before the talk.

March 22, 1966 the day after the talk.

But what was really facinating was the envelope that Jon found next. A medium sized manilla envelope that contained a stack of 5 x 7 cards with the text of the actual speech. This was a gold mine in the archives. I could wait to get hold of these.

Just a handy recycled envelope from his old company.

It has become somewhat of a ritual for me to take people by the YMCA that my Dad built.
In July 2003, on an anniversary trip, I took Beth by to see it.

Mom says click on this swirly thing.
