Listen to Your Old Photos
"Talking Business with Dad"

Going through old photos is interesting because of the things that are revealed when you slow down and start being observant. Take for example this photo.

Laurence Holcomb Fenwick b.1899

Oddly enough it wasn't even hidden away in a box. This has been sitting on a shelf in my living room for years. I've always cherished this photo because it is of my grandfather, Laurence Holcomb Fenwick. It was taken in about 1972 or 1973 and it reminds me of when he lived with us when I was a boy in San Mateo.

Once I scanned the photo and took a look at it closely I realized that I recognized the background of the photo puts him in my Dads old office in San Carlos. Back in the early days of my Dads business his father, my grandfather, worked for him. Even as a boy I thought it was a bit odd but the bottom line was he was helpful and Dad needed help.

I then thought about how much I used to like it when my dad would drop into my office at the end of the day. (My office is in his building.) He would drop by and listen to what I was up to, offer advise and generally I think he was proud of the fact that I was successful even if I wasn't apart of his business. There were many times when I would go up to HIS office as well, seeking advice or sharing a business victory.

A horrible "phone photo" I took on October 22, 2004 in my office.
Notice the bank deposit in his hand, no doubt his last official task of the day.

Then I thought, "Hmm, I wonder if my Dad appreciated having his Dad around as much as I appreciated him being around." I always thought that those business talks I had with Dad would be one of the things I missed the most.

As it turns out, it is. Right before Dad died, I had completed a really great job for my favorite client. I returned home just 3 days before Dad died. I think that I will regret for a long time that I didn't go into the office that last Friday that he worked. I can imagine the talk we would have had and the stories I would have told.

I was right... I will miss those talks.
